Breaking stereotypes: Key lessons from EAfA’s webinar on inclusive apprenticeships in STEM

The European Commission’s European Alliance for Apprenticeships (EAfA) webinar explored how apprenticeships can prevent gender stereotypes and promote equal participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) fields across Europe.

Held on 22 October 2025, the webinar provided a platform for EAfA members, policymakers, VET providers, researchers, gender equality advocates, and employers to share concrete solutions and good practices.

Gender stereotypes hold everyone back

Speakers from the webinar shared that, despite progress in gender equality, stereotypes still shape how young people see their abilities and career options – often limiting their choices long before they enter the labour market.

In vocational education and training (VET), these biases are particularly visible: women remain underrepresented in STEM, while men are unlikely to engage in education and care professions.

This imbalance not only reinforces social stigma but also restricts talent development, limits innovation, and weakens Europe’s competitiveness.

Tackling gender stereotypes

To address these challenges, the European Commission has launched several key initiatives. For example, the Union of Skills which includes a forthcoming VET strategy and a STEM education strategic plan aiming to train one million girls and women by 2028.

Alongside the Union of Skills is the EU Gender Equality Strategy and the #EndGenderStereotypes campaign – both of which raise awareness about how stereotypes influence study and career choices.

Key webinar takeaways

Speakers showcased real-life initiatives that challenge gender norms, support young women entering STEM pathways, and foster inclusive learning and working environments.

The main points from the discussions included:

  • Gender stereotypes remain deeply embedded in VET and STEM, continuing to hinder equal participation.
  • Role models, mentoring, and inclusive company cultures are crucial to attract and retain female apprentices.
  • Collaboration across stakeholders, from educators to employers, is essential to scale up effective initiatives and achieve systemic change.

Together, these insights underline the importance of collective action in building a more balanced and innovative European workforce.
